These famous names are just a few of the recent accidental overdose deaths linked to fentanyl. During the COVID-19 pandemic, more drugs have also been found contaminated with the deadly drug.
There are stories like Brenda Brett's, a beloved cousin and Georgia-native who relatives say had no idea she was taking Xanax laced with fentanyl.
She didn't want to die, they insist. Her aunt found her lifeless body collapsed over her nightstand, and her boyfriend also dead, wedged between their bed and a wall.
They are just a few of the 40,000 Americans who die every year with toxic levels of opioids in their body, a problem exacerbated by a hard-to-detect synthetic version of the drug that experts warn is flooding the market and rapidly making its way into the hands of unsuspecting users.
Fentanyl – 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine – has become the leading cause of overdose deaths in America along with other synthetic opioids, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Overdose deaths hit a new record in the U.S. at 96,779 from March 2020 to March 2021 in lieu of the pandemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That number is expected to rise to almost 100,000.
Often made in labs, the illegal version is sold as powder or put into pills that look like prescription drugs. Even a grain-sized amount can kill.
"Fentanyl is taking over the illicit market," Dr. Nora Volkow, director of NIDA, told USA TODAY.What is fentanyl?
Fentanyl was first developed in 1959 as a potent painkiller used in clinical settings via IV. In the '90s, patches were made so patients could receive the drug topically, most often cancer patients or those being treated for chronic pain, according to an article from the American Pain Society. Then came lozenges and tablets.
It didn't take long after that for the drug to hit the illicit market.
Fentanyl is much more powerful than heroin and morphine, but it activates the same opioid receptors in the brain. Because tiny amounts can create the same highs for users, it's a cheaper and more appealing option for drug deals, says Dr. Nora Volkow.
"Drug dealers are maximizing their profits by lacing or contaminating drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine with fentanyl," Volkow said. "By doing that they are making them much more powerful and this is at the essence of the most challenging problems that we have."
"This is worse than the crack epidemic."
A fatal dose of fentanyl is small enough to fit on the tip of a pencil, according to a public safety alert from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
In 2016, NIDA began to see an increase of overdoses tied to fentanyl that has continued to rise.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported there was a 38.4% increase in synthetic opioid deaths from June 2019 to May 2020. State and local health departments tied the increase to illicitly manufactured fentanyl.
Deaths from the drug had previously been concentrated in 28 states east of the Mississippi River, but 10 western states saw a 98% increase in synthetic opioid overdoses in the same time frame, the CDC reported.
The increase was consistent with larger quantities of fentanyl being manufactured and positive fentanyl toxicology drug tests administered during COVID-19 the pandemic.

"Most of fentanyl overdoses are in combination with other drugs like heroine, cocaine and methamphetamine," Volkow said. "It is all over the place from the East Coast, West Coast and the center of the United States."
She said drug users who do not typically take opioids, but use cocaine or amphetamines, are at an increased risk of overdosing from fentanyl.
"They get the drug and unbeknownst to them, it is contaminated with fentanyl and they do not have the opioid tolerance."
The contamination of fentanyl has increased in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic all the way down to urine collected by rehab facilities, according to Volkow.How has the pandemic has affected fentanyl use?
The amount of fentanyl seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection has increased by 51.45% in the first 8 months of 2021 compared to 2020, according to data from the CBP.
Last month, 1,123 pounds of the drug were confiscated compared to 702 pounds in August 2020.
Some of the seizure made headlines like in Memphis where 2.85 kilograms of fentanyl were found in wooden display boxes shipped from Mexico and $182,000 in fentanyl was seized from within a vehicle during a routine examination at the Brownsville, Texas port of entry from Mexico.
"As fentanyl is in powder or pill form and highly potent, small amounts smuggled can still be profitable. Smaller amounts mean there are more ways in which it can be concealed in smuggling attempts," Matthew Dyman, CBP public affairs officer, told USA TODAY in an email.
He said drug increases are likely due to a massive increase to illegal migration.
"The COVID travel restrictions hindered some aspects of land border drug trafficking, as there was less traffic and more time could be spent examining travelers, which increased drug seizures, but with people staying home instead of going to work, there was an increased demand for drugs," he said.
"There are a lot of contradictory ups and downs."
It's not uncommon after disasters, such as the 9/11 attacks, to see a temporary increase reported in substance use.
"We see with other major events people are feeling traumatized and under stress," said Dr. Andrew Saxon, a member of the Council on Addiction Psychiatry at the American Psychiatric Association. "An easy and natural way to cope would be to take a substance, even though it usually makes it worst in the long-run."
Most of the surveys conducted since the pandemic began have centered around alcohol and cannabis usage.

When overdoses do happen, Saxon said it can be hard to determine if it was unintentional or suicide because many people are taking opioids alone.
"Some of the increase in overdose deaths could actually be an increase in suicides because of the increase in depression and the feeling of hopelessness," Saxon said. "Overdoses from all drugs went up in 2020."Fentanyl hits home
Shawn Keyes, 44, was prescribed fentanyl patches when he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer while in prison in 2003.
Keyes used the patches and a slew of other opiate prescriptions to soothe the pain from the chemotherapy. He would later develop an opioid addiction.
When he was released from prison, he found fentanyl easily on the street but said he quit cold turkey when his mother was diagnosed with cancer.
Although his addiction to the drug was lifted, a family tragedy reared fentanyl back into his life.
In 2017, his cousin Brenda Brett and her boyfriend died from accidental fentanyl exposure after ingesting what they thought were pressed Xanax pills, according to Keyes.Sean Keyes holds up a picture on his phone of his cousin Brenda Brett who died after an accidental overdose
"My aunt found them dead," Keyes said. "My cousin looked like she had tried to get up off the bed but had fallen over onto the nightstand and her boyfriend was wedged in between the bed and the wall."
Keyes said Brett was very outgoing, enjoyed having fun and had classic "middle child syndrome'" – she loved to be the center of attention.
According to Keyes, he was her favorite cousin and has fond memories of Brett trying to visiting him while he traveled the country.
"She had her troubles over the years but when she died, the world lost a huge bright light," Keyes said. "She was a great person who hated bullies and would stick out her neck for anyone."
Her overdose was investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and the autopsy viewed by USA TODAY found traces of Xanax, amphetamine, methamphetamine, morphine and fentanyl in her blood.
Brett had 7.7 micrograms per liter of fentanyl in her system when she died. The GBI told USA TODAY via email that determining a general concentration of how much fentanyl in a system is deadly, is determined on a case by case basis.
A peer-reviewed study published in the journal Annals of Palliative Medicine titled "Reasons to avoid fentanyl" said doses greater than 3 nanograms per liter can cause central nervous system depression and loss of airway reflexes.
Brett had 7,700 nanograms.
"This has been a real issue with pills being sold on the internet and down the street," David Dietz, professor and chair of pharmacology at the University at Buffalo, told USA TODAY.
"Saying for certain if she would be alive if fentanyl wasn't laced in the pill can't be determined because there are inherent risks with taking prescribed medications in the absence of a physician oversight and order."
Dietz said taking drugs that aren't prescribed to you or off the street can potentially cause serious harm due to people not knowing how it will affect their health and not knowing what it contains.

"You take something you think is Xanax and it is laced with fentanyl," he said. "Even if the drug was the amount they thought it was, the user doesn't know how their own risk factors play a role."
Brett had previously struggled with addiction to methamphetamine, but before her death told Keyes she considered herself sober because she wasn't using her drug of choice.
"She had done enough drugs in her time to know the danger of taking fentanyl, and I don't think she would of voluntarily taken it," he said.
Dietz said fentanyl being laced into other drugs is adding fuel to the growing opioid epidemic and being found everywhere.
"This is a problem across all classes and age groups," he said. "It's become a real issue."Drugs are becoming 'much more dangerous'
In most cases, it is very difficult for users to determine a drug is contaminated with fentanyl unless they use a drug testing tool available to users – a fentanyl strip test.
"The use of strip can be very useful because many people taking stimulants do not seek out fentanyl," Volkow said.
The strip test, expanding access to naloxone – a medicine that reverses an opioid overdose – and education are tools Volkow says are needed to curb fentanyl use.
To people who may be considering experimenting with drugs, Volkow said highlighting the devastation of addiction is key.
"People may say well it's no big deal to experiment and the rates are in my favor." she said. "But the reality is that drugs are much more dangerous than they were in the past."

TEL AVIV—About half of adults infected in an outbreak of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in Israel were fully inoculated with the Pfizer Inc. vaccine, prompting the government to reimpose an indoor mask requirement and other measures to contain the highly transmissible strain.

Preliminary findings by Israeli health officials suggest about 90% of the new infections were caused by the Delta variant, according to Ran Balicer, who leads an expert advisory panel on Covid-19 for the government. Around half of the adults who were infected were fully vaccinated, he said. Israel is now reassessing its Covid-19 regulations after moving to open up its society and economy after multiple lockdowns last year.

“The entrance of the delta variant has changed the transition dynamics,” said Prof. Balicer, who is also the chief innovation officer for Israel’s largest health-management organization, Clalit.

The Delta variant, which first emerged in India in late 2020 and is also known as B.1.617.2, has now been detected in more than 70 countries. In the U.S., public-health experts expect it to soon become the dominant strain.

Israeli health officials are optimistic that even if the variant does spread, evidence from countries such as the U.K. show the vaccine will prevent a large increase in severe illness and hospitalizations that plagued the country’s health system in previous outbreaks.

CDC investigating COVID-19 vaccine More People Died From The COVID-19 vaccine LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has been made aware that the COVID-19 vaccine was listed as one of several causes of death for an individual in the State. The individual, a male in his late 40s with a number of comorbidities and a long-term care facility resident, died between 1 and 2 weeks after receiving his first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The death occurred on Jan. 17 and the man received the vaccine the first week of January. The death has been entered into VAERS, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, a national vaccine safety surveillance program run by CDC and the FDA. Anytime a death or any adverse event occurs post vaccination, the case must be reported into VAERS. This process allows the CDC and FDA to closely monitor and assess any adverse events, for ongoing safety evaluations. As is standard protocol for any death reported in VAERS it will be fully reviewed.

Dr. Gary Anthone, Nebraska’s Chief Medical Officer issued the following statement: “Residents of long-term care facilities have been made a high priority in the State to receive vaccinations, due to higher mortality rates in this medically frail population. We have confidence in the safety of the vaccine and understand that there may be questions about a situation such as this. Typically, COVID-19 vaccine deaths can be attributed to anaphylaxis and occur within a relatively short period after the vaccine is given, which is why monitoring is done.

While I cannot speculate on this case, when individuals die days or weeks after the vaccine has been administered, it is more likely due to other underlying factors. It is really important for individuals that have high-risk conditions to consult their medical provider about the best approach to getting vaccinated.”

"The CDC will be, almost in real-time, updating their recommendations and their guidelines," Fauci said of recommendations regarding masking. "But, yes, we do need to start being more liberal as we get more people vaccinated. "Fauci also told ABC's George Step On Us Stephanopoulos during his Mother's Day appearance that he hopes the virus situation will be drastically different by next Mother's Day. "I hope that next Mother's Day, we're going to see a dramatic difference than what we're seeing right now,” he said. "I'm glad that that is opening up, but we have a lot of work to do. WASHINGTON—Three researchers from China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology became sick enough in November 2019 that they sought hospital care, according to a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report that could add weight to growing calls for a fuller probe of whether the Covid-19 virus may have escaped from the laboratory. The details of the reporting go beyond a State Department fact sheet, issued during the final days of the Trump administration, which said that several researchers at the lab, a center for the study of coronaviruses and other pathogens, became sick in autumn 2019 “with symptoms consistent with both Covid-19 and common seasonal illness.”

AstraZeneca PLC promised the world more vaccines, at a lower cost, than any of the more established vaccine makers. It is finding how hard living up to those commitments can be. A public spat this week with U.S. officials over the precise effectiveness of its Covid-19 shot upset regulators and chipped away at the drugmaker’s reputation in its biggest market. The fight has heightened doubts among senior U.S. medical officials about the company’s data analysis, threatening to lengthen the regulatory review. That is already months behind schedule after a separate standoff with the Food and Drug Administration in the fall over disclosures about the vaccine’s U.K. trials.

Wednesday evening U.S. time, AstraZeneca revised its estimate of the shot’s efficacy from large-scale U.S. trials based on additional data, saying it was 76% effective in preventing symptomatic Covid-19, down from the 79% it reported from an analysis on Monday.

The FDA, which needs to sign off on the vaccine before it is used in the U.S., normally sends staffers to clinical trial sites to assess how data is compiled before any approval. The FDA now expects to dispatch more employees to more sites than normal because of the level of mistrust that has built up, according to a senior U.S. official.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical advisor, said Monday that an Israeli study on the effectiveness of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine against the South African variant is misleading. He added that he would be careful in drawing conclusions about the vaccine’s efficacy against the variant.

"With all due respect to my so-many Israeli friends, I think that that reprint — or preprint, as it were, was about as confusing as you possibly could be," Fauci said. "The only thing that wasn’t confusing about that was that you probably need two doses, the way we’ve been saying, absolutely if you want to get protected and get greater protection, because you saw things shifted when you were one or two weeks beyond the second dose. So that’s the first point.

"The second point is that I believe the misleading part about it is it made it seem like you were more likely to get the [B.1.]351 if, in fact, you were vaccinated against the mRNA," he continued. "That wasn’t the case. If you were going to get infected with anything, you would get infected with the more difficult variant, which was 351. That doesn’t mean you have a greater chance of getting it, because when you went out into the post-vaccination period, you were really quite well protected."

Coronavirus vaccine’s efficacy is often described based on the ability of the inoculation to prevent people from contracting the virus. However, a key factor in evaluating how effective a vaccine is is its ability to prevent serious disease, hospitalization and death.

A real-world study conducted by Clalit Health Services and Tel Aviv University in Israel and released on Saturday showed that the South African variant is more likely to break through the vaccine’s protective effect, even after two doses have been administered and more than a week has passed.

However, the study referred to the ability of the vaccine to prevent from infection, not from serious symptoms.

"What we do know, when these breakthrough infections do occur is they tend to occur with fewer symptoms, less virus — less transmissible virus," added Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control during that same White House briefing. "We’re still learning about the transmissibility of this virus in the context of these breakthrough infections. But I would say: Use your prevention measures when you’re outside the home, and I think you’re okay when you’re in the home."

In an interview with FOX Television Stations also on Monday, Fauci explained that the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines still look to be effective at preventing serious illness and death.

Owens is a frequent critique of Fauci and of Joe Biden's administration's handling of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Last year, shortly after the Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccines were approved in December, Owens declared that she would not go anywhere near a vaccine, and slammed Fauci, Bill Gates, and the pharmaceutical industry as a whole.

It's unclear what Fauci did to draw Owens' ire on Monday, though it could have had something to do with his latest commentary on mask-wearing and when the US can expect to return to normal life.

On Sunday, Fauci told ABC's This Week that he expects to see mask mandates relaxed "as more people get vaccinated."

"The CDC will be, almost in real-time, updating their recommendations and their guidelines," Fauci said of recommendations regarding masking.

"But, yes, we do need to start being more liberal as we get more people vaccinated."

Fauci also told ABC's George Step On Us Stephanopoulos during his Mother's Day appearance that he hopes the virus situation will be drastically different by next Mother's Day.

"I hope that next Mother's Day, we're going to see a dramatic difference than what we're seeing right now,” he said.

"I believe that we will be about as close to back to normal as we can, and there's some conditions to that, George Step On Us Stephanopoulos....

"We've got to make sure that we get the overwhelming proportion of the population vaccinated. When that happens, the virus doesn't really have any place to go."

AstraZeneca PLC promised the world more vaccines, at a lower cost, than any of the more established vaccine makers. It is finding how hard living up to those commitments can be.

A public spat this week with U.S. officials over the precise effectiveness of its Covid-19 shot has upset regulators and chipped away at the drugmaker’s reputation in its biggest market. The fight has heightened doubts among senior U.S. medical officials about the company’s data analysis, threatening to lengthen the regulatory review. Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s chief medical advisor, said Monday that an Israeli study on the effectiveness of Pfizer's coronavirus vaccine against the South African variant is misleading. He added that he would be careful in drawing conclusions about the vaccine’s efficacy against the variant.
"With all due respect to my so-many Israeli friends, I think that that reprint — or preprint, as it were, was about as confusing as you possibly could be," Fauci said. "The only thing that wasn’t confusing about that was that you probably need two doses, the way we’ve been saying, absolutely if you want to get protected and get greater protection, because you saw things shifted when you were one or two weeks beyond the second dose. So that’s the first point.
"The second point is that I believe the misleading part about it is it made it seem like you were more likely to get the [B.1.]351 if, in fact, you were vaccinated against the mRNA," he continued. "That wasn’t the case. If you were going to get infected with anything, you would get infected with the more difficult variant, which was 351. That doesn’t mean you have a greater chance of getting it, because when you went out into the post-vaccination period, you were really quite well protected."
Coronavirus vaccine’s efficacy is often described based on the ability of the inoculation to prevent people from contracting the virus. However, a key factor in evaluating how effective a vaccine is is its ability to prevent serious disease, hospitalization and death.
A real-world study conducted by Clalit Health Services and Tel Aviv University in Israel and released on Saturday showed that the South African variant is more likely to break through the vaccine’s protective effect, even after two doses have been administered and more than a week has passed.
However, the study referred to the ability of the vaccine to prevent from infection, not from serious symptoms.
"What we do know, when these breakthrough infections do occur is they tend to occur with fewer symptoms, less virus — less transmissible virus," added Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control during that same White House briefing. "We’re still learning about the transmissibility of this virus in the context of these breakthrough infections. But I would say: Use your prevention measures when you’re outside the home, and I think you’re okay when you’re in the home."
In an interview with FOX Television Stations also on Monday, Fauci explained that the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines still look to be effective at preventing serious illness and death.

"So what might happen is that when you get these new variants, some of them may not be protected against when you’re talking about mild-to-moderate disease, but at the same time, people are not going to get severely ill and wind up dying," Fauci told Fox.
Israel has inoculated over 5.3 million people using the Pfizer vaccine, most of them with both doses.
Last week however, the company halted shipments of coronavirus vaccines to Israel in outrage over the country failing to transfer payment for the last 2.5 million doses it supplied to the country.
A cabinet meeting that was supposed to authorize the new contract was canceled amid infighting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz. Gantz canceled the meeting after Netanyahu’s refusal to approve the permanent appointment of a justice minister. The meeting is yet to be rescheduled.
On Monday, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein harshly criticized Gantz.
“Gantz is committing a crime against the health of Israeli citizens. Minister Ganz jeopardizes Israel's ability to receive vaccines that are essential for the continued functioning of the economy,” Edelstein said.
“His puzzling refusal to purchase the vaccines has persisted even after Gantz and his people received all the explanations for their questions from Health Ministry’s professionals. It turns out that this was a cynical game and a waste of valuable time for the citizens of Israel. He had no intention of allowing the vaccines to be purchased, and everything else was an excuse. The serious health and economic consequences of not purchasing the vaccines will be on his hands.”
“Likud ministers and first and foremost Edelstein have become accomplices in the crime of a criminal trying to escape his trial,” Blue and White responded in a statement. “If Edelstein really cared about the citizens of Israel he would have fought both for the appointment of a justice minister and also for the approval of a budget for additional vaccines.”
In a briefing to the press last week, Health Ministry’s Director-General Chezy Levy said that Israel has enough doses to jab about one million adults who still need to be vaccinated, but not enough to inoculate children as well.
