Fun Facts about Space Cowboys The Movie
True fans of Space Cowboys are likely to have their own favorite scenes and clever lines that they have memorized. There are certainly plenty to choose from thanks to the great writing and expert delivery of the actors. However, here are some interesting facts about Space Cowboys that you are probably not aware of:
- One scene from Space Cowboys features the four older astronauts on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In fact, the actors appeared on the show for real in order to promote the movie.
- Although all four of the older astronauts played characters in their 70s, James Garner was only 54 years old when the movie was completed and released.
- Sean Connery and Jack Nicholson were originally cast in Space Cowboys to play the roles of Jerry O’Neil and Tank Sullivan respectively.
- In addition to playing a starring role, Clint Eastwood directed Space Cowboys and managed to film as many as forty set-ups each day.
- The Cowboy Bar shirt that Tommy Lee Jones wears in the movie hails from the Million Dollar Bar that can be found in Jackson and is one of Clint Eastwood’s favorite bars.
- As if playing a starring role in the movie and directing it were not enough, Clint Eastwood also wrote the theme tune from the beginning of Space Cowboys that was later worked into the now famous score by Lennie Niehaus.
- The dialogues between the young officers and pilots in the opening scenes of the movie were dubbed over by the older actors to make them sound more authentic.
- Space Cowboys was selected by French movie association Les Cahiers du cinema as one of the top ten movies of the year 2000.
- Space Cowboys was the first movie shown at the Venice Film Festival in the year 2000.
- Warren Beatty was one of the actors that were originally considered to play the role of Frank Corvin.
- Tommy Lee Jones, Clint Eastwood and Marcia Gay Harden all won Oscars for their roles in Space Cowboys.
