Cruise holidays vary hugely in price depending on the ship, itinerary, cabin choice and more and can be rather expensive. Travellers are also expected to part with money during the holiday as well. A cruise industry insider has revealed there’s a sneaky way companies trick passengers into spending more. Brandon Presser revealed what he learned during his time as temporary director of Royal Caribbean’s largest ship, Harmony of the Seas.
He told Bloomberg that subliminal messaging is a key part of the passengers’ experience – and they have no idea. Presser explained that cruise ships have ways of strategically moving holidaymakers around the ships to encourage them to spend money in different areas of the vessel. “If casino revenue is low, for instance, senior management might host a raffle or karaoke event at the far side of the slots to drive foot traffic and encourage passengers to linger (or better yet, play) a while,” said Presser. “Activities managers will even film their daily newscast about onboard events with Starbucks iced coffees in hand, as a quiet reminder that passengers can get their venti latte fix on Deck Six.
“Often times, these veiled announcements are aimed at boosting the ship’s bottom line.”
Sometimes the crew members play harmless pranks on passengers to entertain themselves.
One former crew worker revealed they had a trick to confuse passengers into thinking activities were available to them that in fact didn’t even exist. The ex-cruise worker revealed on Reddit that “a favourite [prank] was, while in a passenger area to say to another crew member, loud enough to be heard by passengers, ‘Meet you in the bowling alley tonight!’ “Of course, there wasn’t actually a bowling alley on board. Then we’d wait for the comment cards to come in: ‘Why do crew get a bowling alley when we don’t?’”
Another cruise ship employee revealed a cunning way they dealt with the unpleasantness of having so many naked passengers on board a ‘nude cruise.’ Jay Herring explained the surprising popularity of these cruises in his book The Truth About Cruise Ships – and how much crew dislike working on them.
Two cruise passengers were left stunned after finding a member of staff having sex in their cabin. Bobby, 64, and Mary Jackson, 62, were traveling with Norwegian Cruise Line from Singapore to Thailand on their dream cruise.
Just after boarding the ship, they were confronted with the sight of a naked male crew member having sex with a mystery woman on their bed, The Sun reported. “I was horrified, what I witnessed was extremely unpleasant,” Mrs Jackson said. “There was a man and woman having sex on the bed in our designated room. “I immediately closed the door again.
“Eugene, our cabin attendant, was present and he immediately went to inform his supervisor.
“We are not prudes but this was ridiculous.”
Cruise passengers Mary and Bobby Jackson were traveling on Norwegian Jewel at the time. Picture: Norwegian Cruise Line-Source: Supplied The couple, from Northern Ireland, had paid about $AU8600 for the week-long cruise — their first ever — on the 2376-passenger Norwegian Jewel ship in October. But the trip didn’t get off to the best of starts when they were left waiting on the quay side at Singapore’s Marina Bay for two and a half hours in scorching heat before boarding.
“When we finally got on the ship we first went to the bar for a drink because we were exhausted after all the standing around in the heat,” Mr Jackson said. “We were then shown down to our state room accommodation, which we were really looking forward to seeing.” When they got to cabin 10039, the electronic key card wouldn’t work in the door at first. But at the third attempt, the door finally opened — and that is when their jaws hit the deck. “I could see the back of a man on the bed who was directly facing us and it was obvious he was in the middle of having sex with a woman,” Mrs Jackson said.

Picture: Norwegian Cruise Line-Source: Supplied “I shut the door immediately and we went into the cabin next door where my sister was staying while the staff sorted this out. “I was traumatised and I needed a glass of water.” The couple went to complain to the ship’s guest relations manager but there was no alternative room available because the boat was full up, they said. “We went back to the cabin and tried to go back in there but although the woman had left, the male was still there,” Mr Jackson said. “Two of the ship’s crew in white uniforms eventually persuaded him to leave. He looked very sheepish. “I asked if the crew knew him and they told me he was a worker on the boat.”
Cruise secrets: Crew reveals clever way they tricked passengers on VERY unusual cruise
“Each year, a handful of cruises are chartered and filled with a couple thousand passengers who walked around the ship naked,” Herring said. “Like a nudist colony or a nudist beach, the microcosm of a cruise ship is the perfect hideaway.” Herring’s wife as a crew member one on such nude cruise. “The passenger rules were simple,” he wrote. “They had to be over eighteen and clothes had to be worn when the ship was docked or during the captain’s Party.
The solution was to blast the air conditioning. “The casino employees had no desire to look and these naked bodies, and since the assistant casino manager was married to the refrigeration engineer the A/C was set to be really cold in the casino,” said Herring. “This forced the passengers to wear robes. It made the casino staff cold too but they thought it was worth it.” Nude cruises came with a plethora of problems, Herring explained, one being that the towel was often not used by the nudists when they sat down.
“It just wasn’t a pleasant sight to see someone’s nether regions on a community chair,” he said.
“The housekeeping department was diligent about wiping everything down and security helped enforce the towel rule, but once the crew members witnessed bare skin touch a chair they just didn’t want to sit there any time soon.”
Cruise secrets: Crew reveals clever way they tricked passengers on VERY unusual cruise
Cruise ship holidays often have themed nights but sometimes a whole cruise can have a theme. Such trips might appeal to just a niche audience – and the crew don’t always like working on them. A former cruise ship crew member has revealed what it was like to work on a ‘nude cruise.’ Jay Herring described how these nudist holidays were far from popular with his colleagues.
“They had to be over eighteen and clothes had to be worn when the ship was docked or during the captain’s party,
If they weren’t wearing bottoms then they had to carry a towel and sit on it instead of directly on the chairs. Other than that, clothing was optional for the entire cruise.”
Crew members were unhappy at working with so many naked people, however, and came up with an ingenious way to force passengers to cover up.The solution was to blast the air conditioning.

The awkward truth about nude cruises
“We are safely away and you can now enjoy a ...” There
was a pause, as if the cruise director was having trouble choosing
what, exactly, he should call what was about to happen. Finally he said,
“ ... a carefree environment”.
We were on a boat. Nearly 2000 nudists living the “anti-textile” dream. Not that some of them weren’t almost nude before the cruise director gave the all clear. A skeletal man in his 80s wandered around the ship wearing only a fluorescent thong, his loose skin draped around his bones in cascades that looked like freckled frosting, and a gigantic, barrel-chested man — he looked like he’d eaten an actual barrel — lumbered around the lido deck on an industrial-strength cane wearing only a loincloth. How did I end up here? I’m not a seagoing individual and had never cruised before. I grew up in Kansas, which, translated into Australian, is like growing up in Alice Springs; smack in the middle of the continent, as far away from the ocean as you can get. And even though I now live in Los Angeles, I don’t visit the ocean often. So it was unusual in more ways than one when I found myself booked on a Holland America cruise ship destined to ply the waters of the Caribbean. A quick internet search of cruise ship disasters presented a catalogue of Somali pirates, septic system failures, norovirus outbreaks, and photos of the Costa Concordia laying on its side. Why, I wondered, do people go on these things? What’s the appeal? There are jazz cruises, country music cruises, floating financial seminars, Ink or Swim tattoo cruises, Star Trek-themed voyages and numerous religious excursions like the Book of Mormon Lands package. There is, essentially, a cruise for every lifestyle. Because I was researching a book on nudism, I chose to go on what was called The Big Nude Boat. It was exactly as advertised: Nudists running amok on a luxury liner. They were everywhere. On the decks, in the shops, playing ping pong, guzzling cocktails by the pool and grazing the all-you-can-eat buffets. It wasn’t unusual to get on an elevator and find yourself squeezing in with six or seven totally naked people. All the usual activities you might find on a cruise ship, the cooking classes, the fitness centre, the casino, the movie theatre, the discos and dance halls and bars, were filled with naked people. Even the dining room where dinner attire was required, had a few naked people who stubbornly refused to put on clothes. And, before you freak out, I should note that people sat on towels. That topless woman playing black jack in the casino, the older man drinking a cappuccino in the espresso bar, that young couple sharing popcorn in the movie theatre, they’re sitting on towels. A nude cruise is a skidmark-free zone.
So what kind of people do a naked cruise?
On my first night, I was sitting at the Ocean Bar when I overheard a man, a silver-haired smoothie, complain loudly that there were too many old people on the cruise. “I’m guessing the median age is 65,” he said. He was 62. When old people complain that there are too many old people, then you really know there are too many old people. Most of the passengers were retirees and most of them were American. Which is to say that there were a lot of overweight people strutting around in their birthday suits. They did so unselfconsciously, they weren’t ashamed of their bodies. However, I also met a Harvard professor, a radiologist, a tool salesman, scientists, doctors, lawyers and people serving in the armed forces.
And of course not everyone was fat and saggy. There was a large LGBT contingent who were on the healthy end of the body mass index, and there were some actual bona fide young people, trim and tattooed men and women in their 20s who clung together as if the naked retirees were harbingers of some sort of terrifying apocalypse. It may explain while they consumed copious amounts of alcohol.

“The captain and crew receive specialised training and demonstrate internationally mandated levels of competency. These are professional mariners who take passenger safety very seriously.
“Crewmembers participate in emergency drills such as fire, abandon ship and damage response on a recurring basis, and crewmembers with operational responsibilities receive even more, continuous training.”
Cruise ship: Never do this one thing on a cruise holiday or risk being kicked off
CRUISE ship holidays are increasing in popularity among Britons but it’s important to remember there are still rules that holidaymakers need to obey when at sea - and there’s one thing that could result in you getting kicked off.

Safety information including how to put on a life jacket is also presented.
It’s absolutely obligatory that guests attend the drill, no matter how many times they have been on a cruise or which cruise line they are sailing with.
“The pre-departure assembly muster drill is a coast guard regulatory requirement and all guests must attend even if they have sailed previously,” said Royal Caribbean.
The drill will be held shortly after the cruise ship sets sail.
