Pop Singer Melanie Thornton Dies in Crash
Ms. Thornton was traveling to Zurich on Nov. 24 as part of a European tour to promote her album "Ready to Fly" when the Crossair flight from Berlin went down in a wooded area a few miles short of the runway, killing 24 people, including Ms. Thornton. Eight passengers and two crew members survived the crash, which is under investigation.
Ms. Thornton, a native of Charleston, S.C., said in interviews that she got hooked on singing as a child, mimicking the Motown classics that her mother listened to.
After performing with various acts in the United States and with just $15 in her pocket, she moved to Germany in 1992 to join her sister in the western city of Kaiserslautern.
Her career took off when she teamed up with rapper Lane McCray in the duo La Bouche, which is French for "The Mouth."
La Bouche's greatest success was in Europe, but it also made the U.S. charts from 1995 to 1998 with the dance singles "Fallin' in Love," "Be My Lover," "Sweet Dreams" and "You Won't Forget Me."

Ms. Thornton went solo last year and released her first album in May. She told online magazine Male View Point in an interview that live shows were her passion.
"My love is performing on the stage and being able to do my own music, music I write, or music I've collaborated on with other writers. And to be able to work until I'm 60."
Ms. Thornton eventually moved back to the United States, settling in Atlanta.
Her new single, "Wonderful Dream," went on sale Nov. 26, as scheduled, with the express wishes of her family. The song also is being used in a Coca-Cola commercial.
She is survived by her husband.
