Everything about this National Football League season was about offense. There were super high scores, terrific quarterbacks and the biggest game of the season, featuring two high-octane offenses, was set up to be the perfect showcase for the rip-roaring exhibition that modern football had evolved into. Then the game began, and the Patriots and Rams capped off this thrilling year with the lowest-scoring Super Bowl—ever.

And this was perfect for the New England Patriots.

Tom Brady did not have a signature game. New England did not light up the scoreboard. But the Patriots, a dynasty of nearly two decades that has revolutionized football as much as they have changed with it, beat the Rams 13-3 here in Super Bowl LIII in a different type of barnburner that, despite a dearth of points, provided a nail-biting finish to the year.

With the game knotted 3-3, the Patriots got the ball with 9:49 left at their own 31 yard-line. And in this traffic-jam of a football game, it took only one signature Brady drive to seal the deal. And that’s what he was about to pull off. He began by hitting tight end Rob Gronkowski for an 18-yard gain, the first of four straight completions—capped off by a 29-yarder, once again to Gronkowski. That brought the Patriots inside the 5-yard-line, the first time either team found itself there the entire game.

Then, running back Sony Michel punched in the touchdown for what proved be the decisive—and game’s only—touchdown. Quarterback Jared Goff marched the Rams downfield on the ensuing possession, only to get picked off by Stephon Gilmore and solidify the game’s current. It was all about the defense.

This was in all respects an old-school slugfest straight out of football games that can only be seen on grainy reels. First downs felt like monumental accomplishments. Simply pinning the other team in poor field position was a victory for the offenses. There were a grand total of three points at halftime, and only three more than that after the third quarter. But in this anachronistic Super Bowl, one touchdown was enough.

The win solidifies the brilliance of the Patriots’ run in quality as much as quantity. It isn’t just the sixth Super Bowl that Brady and coach Bill Belichick have won together. It’s that they did so in a display that defied all of the game’s trends against the team that embodied those shifting winds as thoroughly as any.

The 16 combined points were the fewest ever in a Super Bowl. The previous low of 21 came all the way back in Super Bowl VII.
