The Oklahoma Tragedy: A Time to Every Purpose

About Carolyn
Florida PolitiChick Carolyn Elkins was born and raised in Canada. Actively seeking citizenship, she loves everything about America, especially the military. She has blogged about politics, religious and… More

Alli Christian, Jessica WilkinsonI had some reservations about writing this, because it’s so fresh, the wounds are wide open for the people of Oklahoma and it doesn’t seem right to talk about it just now, when people haven’t had a chance to grieve yet. It seems that for the past few years at least, that after a disaster or any tragedy, those effected most are not given a chance to grieve, either because of press coverage or politics.
The only reason why I decided to go ahead with this article is to vent my frustration and anger at the hypocrisy of many who have used this disaster, as they have in the past to politicize it, criticize people through it, or use it to push an agenda.
There have been a few comments I’ve heard these past two days that I’ve found reprehensible, yet as always, the left seems to have no problem accusing the right for politicizing things.  For instance, the creator of the Daily Show, Lizz Winstead thought it’d be funny I guess to say, “This tornado is in Oklahoma, so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives.”
Can we imagine what the outrage would be if someone, say, Larry the Cable Guy had said something like, “This hurricane only hit NY City and New Jersey because it’s been ordered to target liberals.”
I seem to recall that then Republican Presidential Candidate Romney said something about FEMA during the primaries, saying he would be open to exploring whether the role of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could be better played by state governments or private entities. Well, before Hurricane Sandy even slammed into the East Coast, liberals pounced all over that comment with ideas of their own on how to use the crisis which Sandy was foreseen to create.  The New York Times came out with a story claiming, “A Big Storm Requires Big Government”, Huff Po reminded people with this headline, “Mitt Romney in GOP Debate: Shut Down Federal Disaster Agency, Send Responsibility To The States”.  This was mild in comparison to what liberals have said in the past about disasters.
Maybe some will recall lib talker Mike Malloy who after the tornadoes ravaged the southeast states of Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia last year, said, “Their God…keeps smashing them into little grease spots”.   He was referring to the fact that the storms which spawned the tornadoes hit the “Bible belt” because Christians won’t “let some G**** science get in the way.”  Nice, but then again, this is the same guy who called Satan 4 months after Conservative blog great Andrew Breitbart passed away and asked him how “Andy’s doing?”
So back to yesterday’s tragedy in Oklahoma, and foolish, politically charged comments. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) claimed that Republicans were responsible for actually allowing the destructive record sized tornado to occur because a majority of Republicans and Conservatives deny the theory of global warming.  According to Whitehouse, we, who don’t believe in the questionable science of global warming, drag America with us to our fate. He actually claimed that, “the damage that your polluters and deniers are doing doesn’t just hit Oklahoma and Alabama and Texas. It hits Rhode Island with floods and storms. It hits Oregon with acidified seas, it hits Montana with dying forests…” and then finished, “I don’t want a Republican Party disgraced, that let its extremists run off the cliff, and an America suffering from grave economic and environmental and diplomatic damage because we failed…”
People were still digging through rubble, looking for loved ones and neighbors, yet this Senator gets up on the House floor and blames Republicans and those of us who are as always, considered extremists for economic, environmental and diplomatic damage?   This is going to help the people of Oklahoma how Senator?
The Bible says to Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.  What kind of bread would you cast Senator Whitehouse?  Stale and moldy and good for nothing, or fresh and nutritious? I have a suggestion for you. How about closing your mouth and opening your wallet, and making a notable donation to say, a charitable organization such as Samaritan’s Purse, who has had their people in Oklahoma since Obama phoned Oklahoma’s Governor.
While some might want to politicize this tragedy, I am always so awed to see what exactly it is that makes America a great nation, people, not waiting on government, but doing for each other. Neighbors helping, whether they live across the street or are from another state.  Thankfully contributions and items are pouring into the counties most severely hit, as always is the case of a natural disaster.  Most Americans, no matter how poor the economy, always have the biggest hearts and are quick to pour out prayers, supplies, time and money to help those so affected.
I have seen personally community at work after storms and other disasters. While my family is always as prepared as we can be, and having necessities after disasters have struck, I am always so encouraged to see and help with local, county and state people, businesses and agencies who are all working together to help those most in need.  This is the way America has always been, and whether the federal government wants to involve itself or not, this is always going to be the best way. No one knows the needs of the people than those who live in the community.
May God Bless the people of Moore, Oklahoma and the surrounding areas most affected.  To every thing there is a season so please now, let’s end the politicizing and let these people have their season to mourn in peace.
