After Months of Struggle, NBC’s $69 Million Bet on Megyn Kelly Flames Out

Outcry over remarks Ms. Kelly made on air about blackface Halloween costumes proved the last straw in a tumultuous stint on the ‘Today’ show since the network hired the anchor away from Fox News at a lofty salary. NBC canceled her show Friday.

NBC canceled Megyn Kelly’s morning show on Friday, three days after remarks she made about blackface Halloween costumes caused an outcry.

Megyn Kelly’s attempt to go from a hard-nosed prime-time interviewer of world leaders on Fox News to a chipper morning host at NBC’s “Today” came to an abrupt end Friday when the network canceled her show.
But the network’s $69 million bet on Ms. Kelly—meant to add rocket fuel to its morning-show ratings—was troubled from the start.
r insensitive.

Megyn Kelly Opines on NFL National Anthem Controversy — and She Thinks she is Dead On

Megyn Kelly, on day two of her new NBC show, “Megyn Kelly Today,” perfectly summarized the controversy over NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, a move that President Donald Trump said should be a fire-able offense.
Trump recently said that he respects the First Amendment and free speech, but the president’s appreciation for the bedrock of America apparently does not extend to those he disagrees with. Kelly, who has also been on the receiving end of Trump’s insults, voiced her support for the First Amendment on Tuesday — but without such a caveat.
“I am a lover of the First Amendment,” Kelly said Tuesday, “and I think in a way this whole situation underscores some of the beauty of our country.”
The newest addition to NBC’s “Today” went on to say that she believes “those players have every right to take a knee,” but added that “those who object to it have every right to say they object.”

Kelly could not have explained this better. Free speech isn’t about forcing people to stand during the national anthem. NFL players, and all Americans for that matter, should feel that this country is so great for all people that they want to stand.
While I would not personally kneel during the national anthem, I recognize that others have the right to do so. Forcing anyone to stand for something isn’t freedom. In fact, it’s the opposite.
These players are not protesting the flag. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem, made it clear at the time that he was protesting what he sees as racial injustice in America. Others might not agree that there is racial injustice, but again, it’s Kaepernick’s right to have his own opinions, and to protest what he believes needs changing.
I know that this argument might not be popular among my fellow conservatives and libertarians. However, U.S. military service members did not fight only for the freedom of some Americans. They fought for the rights of all Americans. Like it or not, that includes NFL players.
As Kelly correctly concluded in her response to the controversy on Tuesday, “the answer to speech we do not like is not less speech, it’s more speech.”
It’s a shame that our own president doesn’t seem to understand that basic American principle. Perhaps, like he has on so many other issues, Trump will forget he ever called NFL players who kneel during the anthem “sons of b***hes” and recognize the truth of the matter.
I’m not holding my breath.

President Trump brought his fight against national anthem-kneelers to the field of the NCAA championship football game in Atlanta on Monday night, standing and singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Meanwhile, one Alabama player running back Bo Scarbrough was heard yelling 'F--- Trump' before the game, Sporting News reported, showing video of the team apparently walking off the field after pregame warmups.

President  Trump was announced to a varied combination of cheers and jeers as he entered the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in a dark suit and red tie. Waving and smiling to the crowd of thousands, Trump walked onto the field to hear the Zac Brown Band sing the anthem.
With his right hand on his heart, Trump smiled and occasionally sang along with the band.

Both the Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide stayed back in the locker room as the anthem played, which is common among college football teams. They stormed the field shortly afterwards.
But Trump left the game before rapper Kendrick Lamar started his halftime performance nearby.

Plans for the president’s visit had been met with criticism from the NAACP.
Atlanta's NAACP chapter said on its Facebook page that fans inside the stadium for the College Football Playoff title should send Trump a message by waving white towels "simulating a blizzard."

Statement regarding President Trump’s visit to Atlanta Monday:
The Atlanta NAACP will not be officially participating in a protest outside at the game. Trump has made a terrible decision and is disrupting it with his presence. We respect those who choose to do so, and we fully expect some groups who will be protesting outside the game.
We will not let the President’s visit go without a response. If you are lucky enough to attend the game, we encourage you to bring a white towel to wave simulating a blizzard while the president is in the packed stadium. Trump supporters mockingly call the opposition snowflakes, but when we come together we create a mighty storm. We are presently working with a number of civil rights/social justice organizations and we will share additional plans as appropriate. We urge you to pay particular attention to our Twitter feed during the game. You can follow us @naacpatlanta #GoDawgs #ATL #NationalChampionship

Trump’s appearance at the game followed a speech he gave in Nashville earlier Monday to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s Annual Convention.
"In every decision we make, we are honoring America's proud farming legacy," the president said during the event touting his administration's accomplishments. The "American dream," the president said, "is roaring back to life."

Support is growing for a campaign to draft Condoleezza Rice as Commissioner for the troubled National Football League (NFL).
American football, the country’s most popular sport and a bastion of macho male culture, has suffered one of the worst weeks in its history with three high-profile stars facing accusations of domestic violence.
The crisis has led to calls for Ms Rice, a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, to step in replace the beleaguered Roger Goodell as Commissioner.
As far back as 2002 Ms Rice described becoming NFL Commissioner as her dream job.
Now she is getting serious backing, including from former members of the Bush administration, for taking on the task of rescuing a sport whose image has taken a severe battering over the last seven days.
Earlier this week the Washington Post carried a piece by a member of its editorial board calling for Ms Rice, 59, to take over from Mr Goodell, who has come under fire over his handling of the domestic violence scandal which has engulfed the sport.
Politicians and women’s groups were enraged by the NFL’s decision to impose what they regarded as an inadequate two match ban on Ray Rice, the Baltimore Ravens’ running back who knocked his fiancée out cold in the lift of a New Jersey casino.
He belatedly received an indefinite ban after footage of the incident was released by TMZ, a gossip website.
Mr Goodell insisted NFL officials had not seen the incriminating tape when the original ban was imposed.
This has now been disputed and several senators have called for him to step down.
“If he lied to the American people, he has to step down,” said Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat senator for New York.
The Mr Goodell’s plight was worsened when the indefinite ban was attacked by Rice’s wife – the victim of the original assault – who took to the social media to back her husband.
The Washington Post did not mince its words in condemning Mr Goodell and backing Ms Rice.
“Roger Goodell has made a mess of it. Time for the former Secretary of State with an intense love of the game to step in and save the NFL,” the Washington Post wrote.
Others to advance her cause include Karl Rove, George W Bush’s deputy chief of staff.
“I think Condi would succeed in any job she had, as she did when she was national security adviser, Secretary of State, Provost of Stanford, etc,” Mr Rove said.
“If it’s a job she wants, with her encyclopedic knowledge of the sport and passion for the game, I have no doubt she’d be great.”
With the row over Rice showing little sign of abating the sport was hit by two more allegations of domestic violence
On Friday one of the biggest names in gridiron, Adrian Peterson, a running back with the Minnesota Vikings, was indicted by a Texas grand jury for beating his four-year old son with a stick.
He was “deactivated” – or dropped from the team over the weekend as was Greg Hardy of the Carolina Panthers.
Hardy was left out from the side after being found guilty of assaulting his girlfriend by a district judge in July, although her is appealing the verdict.
Should Ms Rice get the post, she will not be the first politician to take on a high profile role in sport.
In Britain Lord Mawhinney, who was a member of John Major’s cabinet, became chairman of the Football League in 2003.
