Sen. Al Franken said he would resign in the face of sexual misconduct
allegations, underscoring how deeply the Capitol is being shaken by the
national reassessment of how men treat women and raising anxiety about
which lawmakers could be next to go. Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) said
in a speech in the Senate on Dec. 7, 2017, that he plans to resign in
the coming weeks after many Democratic colleagues called for him to step down over mounting allegations of sexual misconduct.

WASHINGTON—Sen. Al Franken said Thursday he would resign in the face of
sexual misconduct allegations, underscoring how deeply the Capitol is
being shaken by the national reassessment of how men treat women and
raising anxiety about which lawmakers could be next to go. Mr.
Franken made his announcement in a speech from the Senate floor that put
the Minnesota lawmaker face to face with Democratic colleagues who a
day earlier had praised his work and friendship but called on him to
step aside nonetheless.

Since The New York Times
published allegations of sexual harassment and assault against
Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein in October, multiple men in
entertainment, media and politics in the U.S. and beyond have faced
allegations ranging from inappropriate behavior to forced sexual
misconduct to rape. To be sure, prominent
men have faced sexual misconduct claims before. But the accusations
against Weinstein have opened a floodgate, sparked an international
conversation and put new pressure on companies, industries, and
political leaders to respond. President Donald Trump has condemned some
of the accused, been more muted about others, and found himself again
being asked about sexual harassment and misconduct allegations leveled
against him during last year's presidential campaign. The Republican
says they're fake. The #Metoo moment is
also prompting re-examination of past sexual misconduct claims against
powerful men, including Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the
1990s. He was impeached and then acquitted of perjury and obstruction of
lawmakers' investigation into his sexual encounters with a White House
intern, and he settled a sexual harassment lawsuit stemming from his
time as Arkansas governor.
A look at some of the men accused since the Weinstein accusations emerged: Entertainment:

Meanwhile, Democratic state Sen. Jeff Clemens resigned after a report
that he had an extramarital affair with a lobbyist, and Republican state
Sen. Jack Latvala is being investigated by the Senate over allegations
of harassment and groping. Latvala has denied the allegations. — Former President
George H.W. Bush — Accused of patting seven women below the waist while
posing for photos with them in recent years, well after he left office.
The 93-year-old Republican has issued repeated apologies through a
spokesman "to anyone he has offended," with the spokesman noting that
the former president uses a wheelchair and that his arm sinks below
people's waists when they take photos with him. — U.S. Rep. John Conyers
(D-Mich.) — Accused of sexual harassment toward staffers in his office,
and has settled one claim of harassment. He has denied the allegations,
even the one he settled. — Two Minnesota state
lawmakers — Democratic Sen. Dan Schoen and Republican Rep. Tony Cornish —
said they would resign after they were accused of misdeeds that ranged
from groping colleagues to persistent unwanted sexual advances and
sexting. — British Defense
Secretary Michael Fallon — Accused of inappropriate advances on two
women, the Conservative resigned. Sexual harassment and assault
allegations have also emerged against a number of other U.K. political
figures. Labour Party legislator Carl Sargeant is believed to have taken
his own life after harassment allegations cost him his post as the
Welsh government's Cabinet secretary for communities and children. He
had asked for an independent inquiry to clear his name. Also, Labour
Party member Ivan Lewis has been suspended over an allegation of sexual
misconduct; Lewis disputed the account but apologized if his behavior
had been "unwelcome or inappropriate." — U.S. Sen. Al Franken
(D-Minn.) — Accused of forcibly kissing Los Angeles radio anchor Leeann
Tweeden while rehearsing for a 2006 USO tour; Franken also was

that the Republican had settled a sexual harassment claim from a GOP
caucus staffer. Hoover denied the harassment allegation but said he sent

Roy Moore (R.-Ala.) —Accused of sexually assaulting two women decades
ago when they were teenagers; about a half-dozen other women have
accused Moore of inappropriate conduct. The former state Supreme Court
chief justice denies the allegations. He has rebuffed pressure from
national Republican leaders to step aside; the state GOP is standing by
him. — Johnny Anderson, a
staffer for Democratic Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards — The deputy
chief of staff for programs and planning resigned to avoid becoming a
"distraction" to the governor. Accused of sexual harassment, he denies
any wrongdoing. ___ Sports: — International Olympic
Committee member Alex Gilady — Accused by two women of rape and by two
others of inappropriate conduct. Gilady denied the rape accusations,

‘House of Cards’ Employees Accuse Kevin Spacey of Sexual Assault and Harassment

Sunday, multiple people have accused Spacey of either sexual misconduct,
harassment, or attempted rape

A former production assistant on House of Cardstold CNN
that Kevin Spacey had sexually assaulted him “during one of the show’s
early seasons.” According to the assistant, Spacey put his hands down
the production assistant’s pants while driving to the show’s set. The
alleged advance was unwanted, and the assistant had previously reported
Spacey for sexual harassment. “I have no doubt that this type of
predatory behavior was routine for him and that my experience was one of
many and that Kevin had few if any qualms about exploiting his status
and position,” he told CNN. “It was a toxic environment for young men
who had to interact with him at all in the crew, cast, background
actors.”
CNN spoke to multiple other current and former crew
members who reiterated this description. “All the crew members commented
on his behavior,” one former camera assistant told CNN. “What gets me
is we have to sign sexual harassment paperwork before the start of the
show and apparently [Kevin Spacey] doesn’t have to do anything and he
gets away scott-free with this behavior.”
In a statement, House of Cards producer Media
Rights Capital said that it has opened an anonymous complaint hotline to
investigate any further misconduct. Netflix also released a statement:
Netflix was just made aware of one incident,
five years ago, that we were informed was resolved swiftly. On Tuesday,
in collaboration with MRC, we suspended production, knowing that Kevin
Spacey wasn’t scheduled to work until Wednesday. Netflix is not aware of
any other incidents involving Kevin Spacey on-set. We continue to
collaborate with MRC and other production partners to maintain a safe
and respectful working environment. We will continue to work with MRC
during this hiatus time to evaluate our path forward as it relates to
the production, and have nothing further to share at this time.
Since Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual misconduct in an interview with BuzzFeed Newson Sunday, several others have come forward with allegations involving Spacey. On Thursday, Vulture
published an anonymous interview with a man who alleges that he and
Spacey had a sexual relationship in 1986, when he was 14 and Spacey was
24. In the interview, the man says that the relationship ended when he
was 15 years old, after Spacey attempted to rape him in his New York
apartment. “I always have said, ‘He tried to rape me,’” he told Vulture.
“I told him I didn’t want that, he went again to do it, I told him no,
he went again and pushed harder and grabbed me and pushed harder. I
don’t know how I would see that as anything besides an attempted rape,
which I was able to thwart.”
Also
on Thursday, a former employee of the Old Vic theater in London, where
Spacey was an artistic director for 11 years until 2015, told The Guardian
that the theater’s management and employees consistently ignored
Spacey’s behavior during his tenure. “We were all involved in keeping it
quiet,” the former employee said. “I witnessed him groping men many
times in all sorts of different situations.” Earlier in the week, actor
Roberto Cavazos relayed a similar story relating to the Old Vic. Posting on Facebook,
he wrote that he recalled Spacey “squeezing whoever caught his
attention” at the Old Vic’s bar, and that he had a “couple of unpleasant
encounters with Spacey that were on the edge of being called
harassment.”
Additionally, two other men have spoken up with their own allegations of Spacey’s harassment. Director Tony Montana told Radar on Tuesday that Spacey groped him at a Los Angeles bar in 2003. Another man—who asked not to be identified—told the BBC
on Wednesday that when he was a teen in the 1980s, he woke up to Spacey
lying on top of him. Spacey had invited the then-teenager to stay at
his apartment in New York over the weekend, but when Spacey asked if
they could share the bed, he declined and instead slept on the sofa.
When he woke up, Spacey’s arms were around him. “I was uncomfortable at
best, traumatized at worst,” he said.
Spacey addressed Rapp’s allegations in a statement on
Twitter on Sunday night, saying that he does not remember the encounter
but apologized for “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.”
Sen. Kennedy on sexual misconduct: 'They're all pigs'
(CNN)Sen. John Kennedy didn't mince words Monday about any colleagues accused of sexual misconduct: "They're all pigs."
The Louisiana Republican was speaking with reporters in the Capitol as senators returned from Thanksgiving break.
Kennedy
stopped short of saying that Senate candidate Roy Moore of Alabama --
who has been accused of pursuing relationships with teenagers when he
was in his 30s, as well as assault -- should be expelled from the Senate
if he wins. But Kennedy said an ethics investigation would be
appropriate, as it is in the case of Democratic Sen. Al Franken of
Minnesota, who has been accused of groping women.
If
the accusations prove true, then "there is no excuse for this," Kennedy
said. "None. Zero. Nada. You pretty it up all you want to, it's still a
pig."
There may be differences in the allegations, he added, but none of this behavior should be tolerated.
"There
are gradations of pigs," Kennedy said. "There are major-league pigs;
there are minor-league pigs. There are amateur pigs. There are
first-time pigs. There are experienced pigs. But they're all pigs."
But he said he wouldn't "prejudge" any investigation.
"I'm
going to wait to see the facts," Kennedy said. "There is going to be an
ethics investigation of Senator Franken. If Mr. Moore is elected,
there's going to be an investigation there. And I don't know any of
these people involved, and I'm going to wait and see what the
investigation determines those facts to be."

There Are 44 NFL Players Who Have Been Accused of Sexual or Physical Assault
In
the past few years, multiple news stories involving NFL players accused
of sexual assault or domestic violence have received widespread
attention. As isolated incidents, such allegations are deeply
disturbing.

When
we celebrate these men as athletes and role models while overlooking
their alleged histories, we contribute to a culture in which violent
misogyny is normalized. To combat that, we are focusing on their alleged
histories. As such, we have listed the sexual assault or sexual
misconduct allegations against NFL players in our Rapey* Roster, and the
domestic violence and violence against women allegations in our
Domestic Violence/Violence Against Women Depth Chart.

According to the NFL's own Personal Conduct Policy,
"it is not enough simply to avoid being found guilty of a crime. We are
all held to a higher standard and must conduct ourselves in a way that
is responsible, promotes the values of the NFL, and is lawful."
